Myriad Lemniscate of Raff
9 Color Screenprint
The infinity symbol is a variation of the Ouroboros, which is an ancient depiction of a serpent eating its own tail. The implications represented by the Ouroboros and the infinity symbol are what lent the lemniscate shape to the ideas that stimulated the creation of The Myriad Lemniscate of Raff. The Ouroboros represents cyclicality, in particular the eternal circulation of death and creation in an infinite cycle. The earliest Ouroboros was discovered in the Egyptian Enigmatic Book of the Underworld, incorporated into an ambiguous figure interpreted to represent the beginning and end of time. Its symbolism has been associated with kundalini energy, or a coiled energy at the base of the spine that is attributed to the universal consciousness present in every being. This usage of the symbol is more closely tuned to the sentiments within the print, wherein the lemniscate is illustrated as a flowing myriad of organic, inorganic, and human attributes.
